Map and directions
Dedicated in 1996 during Reunion Weekend, the Class of 1945 Memorial honors those class members who “sacrificed so much” in World War II. The work — carved from Virginia Alberene Soapstone — was designed as a fountain, with slowly falling water suggestive of tears and with a rough, hard back suggestive of elements of war. The two curved and tiered planter-seating areas provide visitors a place to pause and reflect on “the sacrifices, commitment, and dedication of the Class of 1945 during World War II.” Almost 4,000 UMaine students and alums served in World War II. In 2021, a standing plaque was added in front of the Memorial, honoring the Greatest Generation.DR
