Wave Cloud II
Artist: George Sherwood, Massachusetts
Garden, near main entrance of Advanced Structures and Composites Center, Flagstaff Road
This 2016 Percent for Art project is a perfect complement to the Advanced Structures and Composites Center’s research and education in both wind and ocean energy technology. Crafted of stainless steel, the kinetic sculpture is based on wind movements that are influenced by wind speed and direction, shades of light, time of day, precipitation and seasonal light. As you look at the oval with its multiple moving pieces and its 76-inch orbit, perhaps you will have a sense of wind-driven clouds or ocean waves, or cloud shadows moving across water. The work of Sherwood, an award-winning sculptor, can be found nationwide, including at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine.
