Stand of Elms
Artist: Shoshanna White, Maine
University Mall, east of Aubert Hall
Stand of Elms is a glass cube sculpture that honors the American elm, a species once prevalent on the university Mall (and all over North America), but ultimately decimated by Dutch elm disease. The late UMaine professor Richard Campana helped create and administer a vaccine that saved many elms, including over 300 in Castine, Maine. The artist’s creative photographic work showcases Castine’s elms and highlights the beauty of this species. The piece, funded by the state’s Percent for Art Program, was installed in 2011 during Aubert Hall’s renovations.
