Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King Memorial Plaza
North side of Memorial Union and Hauck Auditorium, west end of Beddington Road
King Plaza, adjacent to the Memorial Union, was dedicated in 2008. It is a space that is a testament to UMaine’s opposition to injustice, a location to recognize the Kings’ civil rights leadership, and a setting for contemplation and interaction. Quotations from Dr. and Mrs. King can be found throughout the plaza: Look for them on the brick wall, on panels located on the wall and on individual granite plinths. Stone seat-walls, some straight and some slightly curved, are surrounded by a rich array of grasses, trees, shrubs and groundcover that help define the area. The plaza also serves as a popular pedestrian thoroughfare.
