Personal

I am originally from rural upstate New York.  Growing up, our home was in the middle of a forest and our driveway was a mile-long dirt road.

I lived in Ithaca, NY for seven years, and miss the place terribly.  I also spent a few years living in the Boston area.  I spent a couple of summers at Los Alamos National Lab (Center for Nonlinear Studies, Advanced Computing Lab, and the Complex Systems Group in the Theoretical Division), plus another year and a summer at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, working with Chris Langton on artificial life and cellular automata.  (I miss the green chile in NM.)

I spent some time studying Chinese, and have published two children’s stories (written in Chinese) in “Xiao Peng You” magazine in China.
