  • Native primarily to mountain slopes in western U.S.; maximum development and size found in central Sierra Nevada Range in California, where trees can reach over 150 feet.
  • Not native to Maine, but planted as ornamental for pyramidal shape and attractive silvery blue needles.
  • Young trees popular as Christmas trees, especially in California.
  • Wood used in earlier times to make tubs for storing butter.
