Map and directions

  • Native to American Midwest, introduced species for Maine.
  • Native Americans and early European settlers, especially in what is now Kentucky, brewed a coffee-like drink from roasted seeds (poisonous unless roasted); seeds contained in hanging pods.
  • Leaves emerge later in the spring than in most other species.
  • Gymnocladus is Greek for naked twig or branch.
