Many factors (e.g., performance, cost, material, manufacturing) are often considered in design optimization of a complex system. In presence of uncertainty, deterministic functions (e.g., design constraints) are expressed in non-deterministic (e.g., probabilistic) form, which can greatly increase the computational cost and effort of solving the ensuing optimization problem.
