Masoud Rais-Rohani: Structural & Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Research

The goal of this research is to develop and apply numerical optimization techniques and solution strategies, particularly to problems involving high-fidelity computer simulations.

Highlights of research sponsored by NSF, DOE, ERDC, and NASA:

  • Decomposed multilevel optimization approaches with application to vehicle, material-product, or process-product design problems
  • Element Exchange Method for topology optimization
  • Variable fidelity framework for wing design optimization under static and aeroelastic constraints

Through proper hierarchical decomposition, a complex multidisciplinary system can be divided into a collection of connected, but simpler, optimization problems with improved computational efficiency.
