Stargazers of Africa

Sunday, October 3, 2021

On Sunday, February 20th, you can join us at the Versant Power Astronomy Center from 6:00-7:00pm for a FREE showing of ‘Stargazers of Africa.’ Experience African tales from the Yoruba people and a Nigerian story about the far away stars, and discover the African Stonehenge and Moon calendars made from bones over 40,000 years ago!

Spouses and family members are welcome, but space is limited – preference will be given to those who had signed up in January for the previously scheduled show. We will confirm your attendance by Wednesday, February 16th.

Maine Bound Trips

OIP will be providing a limited number of 50% fee waivers for select Maine Bound trips. The Maine Bound Adventure Center offers adventures led by experienced outdoor leaders to some of Maine’s most beautiful locations.  Transportation and most equipment provided. Take advantage of this offer to get a 50% credit for the trip fee and get out and explore Maine!

Follow directions carefully to request waiver and register:
1. Click the links below to request the fee waiver for the desired trip.
2.  AFTER receiving APPROVAL notification go to  https://umaine.edu/mainebound/programs/schedule/ to register for the trip through Maine Bound, or go to the MB center in person to register.
3.  Upon registration, you will pay the FULL fee. OIP will verify your attendance on the trip and post a credit equal to 50% of the fee to your student account.
Cadillac Sunrise Hike (Saturday, March 26)
From October to March, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the U.S. to see the sunrise. Join Maine Bound staff on a trek up the highest point along the North Atlantic seacoast and learn about the ecology and history of Acadia National Park. Watch the sunrise on top of Cadillac Mountain!

Acadia Rock Climbing (Saturday, April 16)
Climb with Maine Bound Staff on the beautiful ocean cliffs in Acadia National Park! They will teach you how to climb outside on a top rope and show you different climbing techniques.

Cutler Coast Hike (Sunday, April 17)
The Cutler Coast preserve is part of Maine’s bold northern coastline.  A 10-mile loop trail with mild elevation change provides stunning ocean views along with a peaceful walk through the forest.  Join Maine Bound to branch out for a longer hike or explore somewhere you’ve never been!

Trip to Portland & Freeport

Saturday, March 19

Join our full-day trip to Portland and Freeport! We will be spending time in downtown Portland, where there are spots for lunch, coffee, and shopping. Then we will stop in Freeport, where there are lots of outlet stores, like L.L. Bean, North Face, Patagonia, and more!

We’ll depart from Estabrooke Hall at 8:30am to arrive in Portland by 11:00am, where you will be free to shop, eat, and explore. Then we’ll head to Freeport, where there are lots of outlet stores. We will leave by 4:00pm to return to campus by 6:30pm.

Space is limited and registration is required. This trip will be open to family members – please let us know who will be joining you when you sign up, and add children first. It will involve considerable walking, so please also let us know if you require accommodations. It will be $10/adult and $5/child.

Zillman Art Museum

Saturday, April 2

Join us for a trip to Bangor  for an afternoon of art, coffee, and shopping!
We will take the 1:30pm public bus to Bangor and walk to the Zillman Art Museum, which recently opened five new galleries. Then we will spend some time downtown for coffee and shopping, and take the 5:15pm bus back to Orono.
Meet at the Memorial Union bus loop at 1:25pm, or meet us at the Museum at 2:10pm.

Trip to Camden & Rockland

Saturday, April 9

Join us on a trip to Camden and Rockland! We will depart from Estabrooke at 9:30 to arrive in Camden by 11:00, where there are lots of spots for shopping and lunch. Then we’ll go to Rockland to walk the Breakwater and explore downtown, where there are art galleries, shops, restaurants, bookstores, etc. We’ll depart by 4:30 to return to campus by 6:00.

Space is limited and registration is required. This trip will be open to family members – please let us know who will be joining you when you sign up. It will require considerable walking, so please also let us know if you require accommodations. It will cost $10/adult and $5/child.
