Fisheries

The fisheries concentration curriculum enables students to explore the scientific and applied aspects of fisheries ecology and management and gain experience in the field, laboratory, and analytical methods. Students enrolled in this concentration often are active in the University’s student chapter of the American Fisheries Society, an international organization composed of professionals and students in the aquatic sciences. This curriculum allows students to meet the requirements for professional certification by the American Fisheries Society.  In addition to the core curriculum, students must take the following courses:

• SMS 211 Introduction to Aquaculture (fall)
• SMS 230 Marine Policy and Fisheries Management (fall)
• SMS 321 Introduction to Fisheries Science (spring)
• SMS 552 Ecological Approaches to Fisheries Management (spring)
• SMS 562 Fisheries Population Dynamics (fall)

Aquatic science course (Choose two of the following courses)  — 6 credits

• BIO 430 Ecology and Systematics of Aquatic Insects (fall, odd years)
• BIO 463 River Ecology (fall, even years)
• BIO 468 Limnology (fall, odd years)
• SMS 302 Oceanography (fall)
• SMS 322 Biology of Marine Vertebrates (variable)
• SMS 422 Biology of Fishes (fall)
• WLE 423 Wetland Ecology & Conservation (fall)
