The small town of Merrill was incorporated in 1911 from the earlier township and plantation of the same name, named for Captain William Merrill, an early owner, and resident of the township. (Source) The town’s economy is based primarily on agriculture and forestry, and it has become a popular stop for ATV and snowmobile enthusiasts for its many trails.
