Smyrna

Welcome to Smyrna!

Welcome to Smyrna

Smyrna was originally granted to a Methodist minister from Vermont on the terms that he would populate the town and build mills and schoolhouses within five years, which he failed to do. After other settlers bought the land and developed the area, the town of Smyrna was incorporated in 1839, named after Smyrna, Turkey. Agriculture and lumber were the main industries, and a railroad station made Smyrna a local hub of business activity. Although the railroad has slowed down, Smyrna remains an industrious little town to this day. Starting in the 1990’s Smyrna became the first home of Maine’s burgeoning Amish community, which has helped to revitalize the town.
