10 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues
1.Get some rest.
- Make time to get adequate sleep at night. You should sleep about 7-8 hours per night, but be careful not to sleep too much as it can make you more tired.
2. Eat right.
- Avoid refined and processed foods (bread, rice, sugar). Instead, eat more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. You’ll have more energy and an improved mood.
3. Hang out.
- Hanging out with other people casually or at campus events will pass the time while alleviating feelings of sadness and loneliness.
4. Exercise.
- Working out increases fitness and psychological well being. You’ll have more energy, and your brain will be flooded with endorphins. Check out the Recreation Center on campus!
5. Treat yourself.
- Make exciting plans that will give you something to look forward to. Anticipation keeps the mind focused in a positive way. It can be as simple as a plan to go to the movies on the weekend.
6. Get social support.
- If you need a pick me up remember you have people who care about you! Your friends, family, and roommates are always there to talk, have coffee and encourage you!
7. Relax.
- Make time to take breaks throughout the busy class and study days. Relaxing will allow your brain to let go of stress, leaving you calm.
8. Get some sun.
- Not only does sunlight provide us with vitamin D, sunlight also lifts the spirits and improves mood. Try to go outside or sit near a window while studying.
9. Embrace the season.
- We’re living in a winter wonderland! Don’t avoid the cold and snow- embrace it. Grab some friends and head outside for some sledding, snowman building, or ice skating!
10. Find a new study spot.
- Not only is the campus huge, but there’s so many cool places to explore in Orono and Bangor! Think about changing your study spot to a local cafe or an unfamiliar academic building.
