- Hardy evergreen (conifer) widely found in Maine, from coast to mountain tree lines.
- An important Maine forest softwood used for pulp, paddles, oars, piano sounding boards, lumber; cones used in wreaths.
- Roots used by Native peoples to tie together pieces of birch bark for canoes.
- Also called cat or skunk spruce because of strong odor, especially when seeds are crushed.
