Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)
Two trees in front of Holmes Hall, Munson Road
- Abundant throughout Maine except along the coast and the far north.
- Lower surface of leaves silvery in contrast to green upper, providing striking two-tone effect.
- Often planted as ornamental in urban areas of country because of its rapid growth and attractiveness; autumn leaves are pale yellow.
- Wood is softer than that of sugar (hard) maples (Acer saccharum), and sap has lower sugar content.
