Red Oak (Quercus rubra)

- Most common oak species in state, found throughout, fast growing.
- Uses include furniture, lobster trap runners, flooring, firewood, timber and landscaping. Historically used in shipbuilding.
- Acorns used by Native peoples as a food source for protein, fat and starch.
- Dead leaves often stay attached in winter, a phenomenon termed marcescence.
