American Basswood (Tilia americana)

- Found throughout forests of Maine; name derives from tough inner bark (bast), which has been used for ropes and mats.
- Deciduous tree, also known as American linden.
- When the tree is in full bloom, it often attracts bees in such quantity that a hum can be heard; flowers have been used to make tea, sap to make syrup.
- The soft, easily worked wood is used for moldings, veneer, dowels and pulp.
