- Native to isolated locations in southeastern U.S., somewhat rare.
- Noted for its spectacular display of fragrant pendulous flowers.
- Hardy, deciduous, ornamental.
- Fresh-cut wood is yellow and used in specialized furniture, gunstocks and decorative pieces; root bark used as dye by early settlers in Appalachia.
