- Native to mountains of northern and central Europe; planted in Maine both in forest plantations and as ornamental.
- Great economic importance in the state with wood used primarily for pulp.
- Tall, symmetrical and graceful evergreen, branches often sweeping the ground; long cones hang down from branches.
- Many large Norway spruce around campus.
