European Larch (Larix decidua)
Small grove of trees, slightly beyond southwest end of Alumni Hall, Munson Road
- Native range is central and southern Europe; important timber tree in Europe.
- A deciduous conifer whose summer green needles turn golden in the fall before dropping.
- Commonly planted as ornamental in the northern U.S. and Canada.
- Maine’s forests contain the eastern larch or tamarack (Larix laricina), whose seed cones are smaller than those of the European larch.
