Kentucky Coffeetree
(Gymnocladus dioica)
Three trees on lawn, east side of Corbett Hall, Long Road
- Native to American Midwest, introduced species for Maine.
- Native Americans and early European settlers, especially in what is now Kentucky, brewed a coffee-like drink from roasted seeds (poisonous unless roasted); seeds contained in hanging pods.
- Leaves emerge later in the spring than in most other species.
- Gymnocladus is Greek for naked twig or branch.
