Office of Facilities Management
Overview
The Office of Facilities Management (OFM) manages construction projects, facility maintenance and operations, the central vehicle fleet and garage, the central power plant, campus infrastructure, housekeeping and custodial services, recycling, and resource recovery programs for the University of Maine. There are also many offices that support these functions through administrative work. The OFM remains committed to sustainability goals such as the Stormwater Management Plan, and goals outlined by the Campus Master Plan and the University’s Climate Action Plan. Information about environmental permits on campus, available jobs, and campus notifications such as road closures can be found on the OFM website. For more information, please contact 207-581-4400 or 5765 Service Building, Orono, ME, 04469.
Work Requests
The Facilities Management (FM) Operations Center processes many work orders to support campus life. They provide various services to staff and students, though some are only offered to University employees. More information about different service requests and instructions on how to make them can be found on the Office of Facilities Management website. If you are not sure what type of request to make, call the Work Control Office at 207-481-4400. If you are trying to submit a maintenance request for students, contact Housing Services at 207-581-4580.
Types of Work Request
- Key: if you need a building or room key to be cut
- Services: if you need non-maintenance work such as carpet, bookcase, or light fixture installation
- Event: if you need assistance with an event
- Card Swipe Access: if you need card swipe access
- Maintenance: if you need to report non-emergency facility maintenance issues such as broken tiles, clogged toilets, broken lights, etc… Please make sure to provide as much information about the location and nature of the issue as possible.
Event Services
Information about setting up parking lot barricades, signage, equipment and vehicle rentals, custodial services for events, and moving services can be found on the Office of Facilities Management website. Students, organizations, and faculties must go through the proper channels before setting up a bonfire or doing any digging on University property. For a bonfire event to be approved, you must fill out an event planning form with the University, obtain a fire permit from the Center for Student Involvement, notify the Fire Department, and obtain a work order from the OFM. It is very important to get a digging permit before breaking any ground because there are many electrical, gas and water lines laid across University grounds. Contact UM.digsafe@maine.edu or resources on the OFM website for more information.
The OFM recommends utilizing the University of Maine’s Conference Services Division for help with coordinating dining, room set-ups, and lodging arrangements for your event. Contact Conference Services at 207-581-4093 for more information. Professional and experienced staff can assist with:
- Flexible accommodations with competitive conference rates for groups of 15 to 1,500
- Instructional technology, video conferencing, and audiovisual services
- Web-based pre-registration and on site registration services including credit card processing and customized confirmations
- Account management and direct billing services
Vehicle Rentals
The University of Maine motor pool is maintained by the Office of Facilities Management and contains various sedans, cargo vans, pickup trucks, and passenger vans. Anyone operating a large van must be at least 21 years old if there are more than 5 people being transported. The daily fee differs depending on the type of vehicle being utilized. University vehicles may only be used for University related business and can only be rented by University faculty, staff, or students (unless a different party has received approval from the Motor Pool Office). No smoking, animals, or pets are allowed in Motor Pool vehicles. Those who wish to rent a vehicle must be at least 18 years old (21 for some vehicles or situations), have possessed a driver’s license for at least 2 years, agree to a background check of their driving history, and complete the necessary forms. More information about rental requirements, relevant forms, and contact information can be found on the OFM website. Reporting
Emergency Reporting:
If you encounter a potentially life threatening emergency, such as the smell of gas, oil, or smoke, contact Public Safety immediately (campus phones dial 911, cell phones dial 207-581-4040). During normal work hours (Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), please also notify Facilities Management at 207-581-4400.
Non-Emergency Reporting:
The OFM would like to hear from you about maintenance issues and unsafe conditions on campus (ex. elevators out of service, streetlights that are out, leaks, issues with heating, etc…). More examples and information related to making a report can be found on the OFM website. For Dorm Concerns: contact Property Management at 207-581-4444. For general campus concerns: Non-emergency issues: call 207-581-4400 or fill out a “Facilities Management Request” form on UMS quick links.
Resource Recovery
The OFM is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the UMaine campus through resource recovery programs. Resource Recovery’s primary function is managing recycling and waste services for most of the campus community. All kinds of paper products are collected to be recycled, organic waste from dining facilities is collected for composting, construction and demolition debris is collected and sorted for recovery, and many other materials are recovered for various purposes. The ongoing support and participation of students, faculty, and staff have endured the success and growth of recovery services. Please contact Resource Recovery, Facilities Management, at 207-581-3076 or daniel.e.smith@maine.edu for more information.
Single Stream Recycling
The single-stream system simplifies the recycling process across campus. To recycle with single-stream, just find a designated receptacle and place any clean, acceptable material inside (no sorting). For more information, contact the Sustainability Office at 207-581-1571.
Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
The University of Maine maintains a small Material Recovery Facility where bulky wastes and materials generated by construction, land clearing, and renovation projects are processed for reuse or disposal. Brush and tree waste is chipped and used on campus wood paths or sold to local companies that use it as biofuel. Soil, asphalt, concrete, stone, and other aggregates are stockpiled, crushed and screened, and reused in sidewalk/road construction, landscaping, and drainage projects, as well as for any other suitable purposes on campus. Please contact UMaine Recycles at 207-581-3076 or dennis.grant@maine.edu for more information or to request services.
