Scholarships

There are several scholarships available to undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students who qualify. The University of Maine uses ScholarshipUniverse, a scholarship matching platform, to match students with available scholarship opportunities. The Office of Student Financial Aid has more information about using ScholarshipUniverse in your scholarship search process available on their website.

Other scholarship resources are available from the UMaine Scholarship Resources page. The College of Engineering offers scholarships to students entering engineering and to students already enrolled in an engineering major. Additional scholarships are offered through Army or Navy ROTC.

Rocket and light house illustration The Maine Space Grant Consortium Fellowship and Scholarship Program

The purpose of the Maine Space Grant Consortium Fellowship and Scholarship Program at the University of Maine is to provide research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students in aerospace technology, space science, earth science, and human exploration/space development, and other science or engineering related fields. With Maine Space Grant Fellowships and Scholarships support, undergraduate and graduate students at affiliate institutions may:

Conduct research in areas of interest to NASA,
Spend time conducting research at a NASA flight center,
Facilitate the development of a liaison between researchers at the University of Maine and one of NASA’s centers, and
Facilitate technology transfer from the University of Maine to industry.

Mechanical Engineering Scholarships

American Welding Society (Maine Section) Scholarship Fund

The American Welding Society (Maine Section) scholarship fund (E) was established in 1970. The income from this fund is to be used for scholarship assistance to a student enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Maine at Orono who is taking courses associated with welding or metallurgy. If the income from the fund is not awarded to a student in any year, it is to be added to the principal and thereafter remain a part of the principal.

The award will be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid only to a student maintaining scholastic grades satisfactory for obtaining an Engineering Degree.

Armen Gechijian ’52 Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund

The Armen Ghechijian ’52 Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine in 2018 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift from Armen Gechijian. The principal shall be endowed and distributions, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Maine. The student(s) shall be in good academic standing. The donor intends for the fund to be permanently endowed so that the principal will not be invaded under any circumstances for awards from the fund. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion after consulting with the President of the University of Maine.

The Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, in consultation with the Dean of the College of Engineering, shall select the recipient(s). The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.

Clifford, George E. ’43 Memorial Scholarship

The George E. Clifford ’43 Memorial Scholarship (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1994 with gifts from the family, friends, alumni and the student branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in memory of Professor Emeritus George E. Clifford, who taught many of the applied Mechanical Engineering courses for 33 years until his retirement in 1988. The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to meritorious students enrolled in applied Mechanical Engineering courses.

Selection of the recipients shall be made under the direction of the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Davee, Everett W. Scholarship Fund

The Everett W. Davee Scholarship Fund (F) was established in the University of Maine foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine by his daughter, Pauline Davee Hitchings ’39 in honor of her father, who was a member of the mechanical Engineering faculty at the University of Maine. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a student in Mechanical Engineering.

Selection of the recipient shall be made under the direction of the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Ellis-Young Engineering Scholarship Fund

The Ellis-Young Engineering Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, by Osborne N. Ellis, a member of the Class of 1951, and Virginia Young Ellis, in celebration of the Ellis and Young families. The principal shall be endowed and only the income shall be used to provide scholarship aid for undergraduate junior or senior students who are graduates of Maine high schools and attending the University of Maine majoring in civil or mechanical engineering. A preference shall be given to graduates of Lawrence High School, Fairfield, Maine (or its successor school). Criteria for selection shall be in the following order of priority: attitude (assessment shall include but not be limited to self confidence, industriousness and an outgoing, pleasant personality), financial need, scholarship (a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale) and good written and oral communications skills.

The Civil and Mechanical Engineering faculty shall make nominations for the candidates. Selection of the recipient(s) shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Dean of Engineering.

Flagg, Warren W. and Hazel S. Scholarship Fund

The Warren W. and Hazel S. Flagg Scholarship Fund (F) was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift from Warren W. Flagg ‘5 and Hazel S. Flagg. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering. A preference shall be given to students in Mechanical Engineering, who have either a financial need or a high academic standing. The minimum award shall be at least $500 per school year.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Dean of the College of Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Foster, Walter H. III Scholarship Fund

Th Walter H. Foster III Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2008 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, with a bequest from Walter H. Foster III, who earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1977, after serving in the Army in Vietnam. He enjoyed a distinguished career involving gas and steam turbine systems. He established this fund in honor of Walter H. Foster, Sr., Jr., III and IV and any subsequent Walter H. Foster’s who might be issues of the current Walter H. Foster’s. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used as follows: 75% of the income shall be used to provide scholarship aid for worthy second, third or fourth year mechanical engineering students attending the University of Maine who demonstrate financial need, have attained “C” or better grade point averages and exhibit talent and the special efforts to make a difference in our world. 15% of the income shall be used as a building fund for engineering facilities. 10% of the income shall be used for bonuses to mechanical engineering professors recognized by their peers as outstanding mechanical engineering educators.

The Chair of Department of Mechanical Engineering shall make selection of the scholarship recipient(s) in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the scholarship income from the fund. The Dean of Engineering shall administer the building fund and professor bonus income from the fund.

George A. Norton ’43 Scholarship Fund

The George A. Norton ’43 Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, in 2013 with a bequest from Jane G. Norton. Mr. Norton graduated from the University of Maine in 1943 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a captain in the Signal Corps in the South Pacific. Mr. Norton worked for 20 years as a construction engineer at the Monsanto Company, then worked another 20 years as director of the physical plant at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a life member of the United States Power Squadron. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to students enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Maine.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department (or its successor program). The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Hosmer, Thomas P. Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

The Thomas P. Hosmer Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1993. The income from the fund shall be used to assist undergraduate students in preparing for careers in design engineering. Recipients shall be in their third or fourth year of study in Mechanical Engineering, shall have demonstrated a high degree of competence in their studies, and shall have demonstrated a strong interest in design engineering.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Lipphardt, Louis E. Sr. Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund

Louis E. Lipphardt, SR. Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2008 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, through a charitable remainder trust established by Louis E. Lipphardt, Sr., a member of the class of 1948. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship aid for undergraduate students attending the University of Maine majoring in mechanical engineering, with a preference for those students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. The

Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering (or his or her designee) shall make selection of the recipient(s). Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the Fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.

Merrill, Howard and Edith Scholarship Fund

The Howard and Edith Merrill Scholarship Fund (F) was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 1998 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift/bequest from Howard W.Merrill ’42 and Edith Huntley Merrill ’43. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students studying or planning to study Mechanical Engineering. A preference shall be given to those students who have graduated from a Maine high school. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board ofDirectors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department. The income from the fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Sanborn, Ralph D. ’39 Scholarship Fund

The Ralph D. Sanborn ’39 Scholarship fund (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1988 by a gift from his wife, Edith T. Sanborn ’38. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a meritorious student enrolled in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine. The recipient shall be a resident of New England with financial need.

Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Stickney, Fernald S. ’23 Scholarship Fund

The Fernald S. Stickney ’23 Scholarship Fund (F) was established in 1982 at the University of Maine at Orono in the University of Maine Foundation by family and friends of Fernald S. Stickney. The income from this fund is to be used to provide scholarship(s) to student(s) from the State of Maine majoring in Engineering at the University of Maine at Orono, with first preference to be given to students in Mechanical Engineering on the basis of academic excellence and not need.

Selection of the recipients shall be determined by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Science in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Tibbetts, Raymond Winslow Memorial Fund

The Raymond Winslow Tibbetts Memorial Fund (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1990 with a gift from Tibbetts Industries Foundation of Camden, Maine. The income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used to support a meritorious student enrolled in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Mechanical Engineering Department Faculty, or its designee, in consultation with the Office of Student Aid. At the discretion of the Mechanical Engineering Department, all or part of the annual income may be returned to the principal account. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid. If, at some future time, the Mechanical Engineering program ceases to exist, the fund shall be used for student support under the direction of the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Townsend, John Laurence, Class of 1924, Scholarship Fund

The John Laurence Townsend, Class of 1924, Scholarship Fund (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1998 through a bequest from Laurence Townsend, a member of the Class of 1924. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to students with financial need enrolled in Mechanical Engineering. If, at any time the governing body of the University of Maine determines, in its sole discretion, that this fund cannot be used to substantial advantage for the purpose specified above, the income may be used for one or more other purposes similar in general nature such as engineering or science or for such other educational purpose as said governing body may determine.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Watson, Harry D. ’20 Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Harry D. Watson ’20 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation at the University of Maine in 1984 by his family and friends. (In 2007, at the request of Mr. Watson’s family, the fund description was changed to add biographical information, to remove financial need as a criterion and to provide that the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering shall select the recipients.) The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students who are residents of the State of Maine and majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine in Orono. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the Fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donors’ intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.

Selection of the recipients shall be under the direction of the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.
