Summer Orientation for Non -Traditional Students

To : Newly accepted nontraditional students ( Transfers or First Year students)

Congratulations on your acceptance at the University of Maine. I am certainly hoping that you have decided to enroll and will be attending UMaine this coming fall.

As a non-traditional student, you will be part of a special group of students who have chosen to pursue a UMaine degree while already managing many other life roles.About 10% of UMaine undergraduates are considered nontraditional students. These students  are those who have chosen to come to/ return to  college several years past their graduation from high school, undergraduates who are 24 years or older, are parents themselves and/or are veterans. As the Staff Associate for Commuter and Non Traditional Student Programs (CNTSP), it is my role to assist you in becoming a successful, engaged UMaine student.

By now you may have received an invitation to the UMaine 2018 Summer/June Orientation program for newly admitted students.  As you can see, all new students are invited to attend an orientation program that includes an overnight stay in a residence hall on the UMaine campus. The Summer Orientation is designed to assist you as a new student to learn more about the campus resources available to you as well as help you plan your academic program.

UMaine recognizes that as a nontraditional student, you may have more time constraints and some unique needs.  In light of this, we have made some special arrangements for your Summer Orientation program. The most critical aspects of the summer orientation, including meeting with your academic college faculty and staff will take place Day One of your session.  Please plan to arrive about 12:30PM and stay until after the Academic Advising session. You are also welcome to stay for dinner and/ or return for any other evening or Day Two programs. The dates and associated colleges are outlined below. Be sure to select the session designated for your College or Program.

You will also want to plan to attend the New Student-Commuter Welcome Day on August 30, 2018, in the Commuter lounge, Memorial Union. This is a special welcome day designed to meet the needs of new students who will be living off campus, many of whom are nontraditional students like you.
