About Us
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Advising and Student Services Center is a centralized advising office aimed to provide support and guidance to all UMaine students.
First called the CLAS Advising Center in August 2012, the established goals have always been to increase student access, connection, satisfaction, and retention in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Since it’s beginning, the CLAS Advising and Student Services Center has been committed to maintaining a strong, student-centered advising approach focused on student success.
As academic advisors, we understand there is a need for more than just selecting classes. Students often face important choices early in their education and need proactive advising about resources available to them, guidance in thinking critically and responsibly about their learning, and help in informing and supporting good choices. A holistic advising approach is used from our staff of advisors when meeting with students, and each advisor is trained to work with students in identifying both successes and challenges faced when going to school. Our ultimate goal is to provide students with the necessary support and guidance to reach graduation.
Though the CLAS Advising and Student Services Center is open to any UMaine student, our academic advisors primarily work with undecided students (both in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Explorations Program), students on academic probation, and newly accepted transfer students. Connections with students begin at UMaine Orientation and continue during a student’s academic journey until graduation. Furthermore, Academic Advisors teach various first year success seminars to new and at-risk students in order to assist their transition to college and provide weekly interactions.
The CLAS Advising and Student Services Center looks forward to working with you during your time at UMaine!
