Frequently Asked Questions

What does the tuition waiver cover?

The tuition waiver benefit covers 100% of the tuition cost of courses within the MBA. Employees are still responsible for fees and their textbooks. Most online students plan on these extra costs to be around $200 per course.

CEAC provides small grants to help UMaine – Orono employees cover the cost of books. Learn more at: https://umaine.edu/ceac/professional-developmental-funds/

Do I need to come to the Orono Campus?

No, you do not need to come to Orono campus.  The MaineMBA is offered 100% online, at the Orono campus, or at the Portland campus. You may choose to take courses online or at either location.

What time are the classes offered?

The MaineMBA is designed for working adults, so courses are offered in the evening (typically 6pm-9pm), online, or, occasionally, on the weekend. Most online courses are asynchronous, meaning that you can log in and do the coursework whenever you have time.

How many hours a week should I expect to spend on classes?

We advise students to plan to spend about 10-15 hours per week, per course. Some courses will require more of a time commitment, others will require less.

Will I need to take the GMAT?
The GMAT is waived for UMaine System Employee applicants who fulfill waiver criteria, including 1.) Those who already hold a graduate degree, CPA, CFA, CFP, or equivalent industry designation. 2.) Those with significant leadership and budget/finance experience, or 3.) Veterans of the U.S. Armed Services. 4.) Three or more years of industry experience in a STEM field or highly quantitative or analytical environment. 5.) A undergraduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher that focused in STEM or applied quantitative fields.

Can I take a course for professional development without applying to the MBA?

Yes, qualified employees may take stand-alone courses for professional development. Dependents, however, must be admitted to a degree-granting program to receive the tuition waiver benefit.
