Descendant Community Engagement

Community engagement is at the heart of our work. We strive to work closely with local and Indigenous communities to ensure that our research acknowledges the rights of Indigenous peoples to interpret, narrate, and steward their archaeological heritage. Through our community-engaged work, we aim to transform how archaeological practice is undertaken. Our holistic approach to archaeological research enriches our understanding of the region’s dynamic archaeological heritage and allows us to learn about and from past lifeways.

As an affiliate of the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science’s Northeast Hub at the University of Maine, our lab engages with place-based transdisciplinary and cross-cultural projects using a community-based approach to our archaeological research.

Our community partner organizations include:

Cultural and Historic Preservation Department, Penobscot Nation

Tribal Historic Preservation Office, Mi’kmaq Nation

Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians

Tribal Historic Preservation Office, Passamaquoddy Tribe
