Welcome to the Northeast Archaeology Laboratory

Our Mission

The Northeast Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Maine is a research and curation facility that advances the understanding of the rich archaeological heritage of the northeast region through scientific inquiry, preservation of heritage collections, and meaningful and active collaboration with communities whose heritage we research and explore.  We strive to foster an environment that promotes cross-cultural and interdisciplinary scholarship, values Indigenous knowledge systems, and nurtures the next generation of archaeological scholars. We carry out our work in sustainable and ethical ways, contributing to the stewardship and interpretation of archaeological sites and materials for present and future generations.  Through the inter-connected activities of laboratory analysis, fieldwork, and community collaboration, the Northeast Archaeology Lab cultivates a deep appreciation of past lifeways and inspires ethical stewardship of regional cultural legacies.

Our Vision

The vision for the University of Maine’s Northeast Archaeology Lab is to be a leader in archaeological and heritage science research, teaching, and service.  We seek to transform archaeological practice in the Northeast, and more broadly, by cultivating collaborative approaches to archaeological research, ethical heritage science, and heritage stewardship. We aim to advance understandings of human pasts in the northeast and to serve as the lead institution for inspiring ethical archaeological knowledge production and promoting archaeology as a means for addressing contemporary societal challenges.
