Play: “The Poets and the Assassin” by Reza Jalali 7:30pm Minsky Hall

April 7, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

“The Poets and the Assassin—Daughters of Iran” is a five act play written by Reza Jalali featuring monologues based on Iranian history told by women whose stories embody and reflect the complex and mostly unexplored roles of women’s participation at “the forefront of [Iran’s] national struggle for liberation, democracy, and human rights” (Reza Jalali).  Each of the characters, from Scherhazade to a modern-day woman, speak directly to the audience and focus on different topics from art to politics to protest, and in doing so, reveal the personal and communal, the private and public lives of women in Iran. The play is followed by a discussion with the audience and the writer, director, and cast members whose performances provoke and challenge all to confront prevailing assumptions and stereotypes.
