Itinerary

Note – we put some scheduled times in here just to give you some ideas. You can pick and choose what you want to do. Be sure to look at when they are open and if there are any COVID restrictions. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to call any that you plan to visit just to be on the safe side.

The Schoodic Peninsula is located just east of Mount Desert island, and hosts several small harbors that are dotted throughout. Included in these are Winter Harbor, Prospect Harbor, and Birch Harbor. At the very bottom of the peninsula sits Schoodic Point, and a section of Acadia National Park. The area offers stunning views of MDI, as well as Maine’s famous rugged coast and surrounding islands.


Day 1 (Winter Harbor and Lower Schoodic Peninsula)

Arrive the night before the adventure begins at MainStay Cottages & RV Park.

Note: MainStay has a minimum of a 3 night rental for cottages.

Visit the Schoodic Marine Center

The Marine Center is home to all kinds of events held over the course of a given year. Check out their website for more information, and a schedule of events!

Prospect Harbor Soap Company

Offers a range of skin care products like soaps, scrubs and sprays, as well as home products like candles! Take home a piece of hand-crafted Maine soap to remind you of your visit!

They offer an amazing glimpse into the vibrant art community that Maine has! They are open by appointment for now, but they have on display sculptures and gorgeous paintings by local artists.

Nib & Thimble

They are a wonderful gift shop that is perfect to pick up some early holiday gifts! The shop sells jewelry, hand-made gifts, stationery, accessories, and more!

Head on down to Schoodic Point

Follow Main Street east out of Winter Harbor and take a right onto Schoodic Loop Road

Experience Maine’s famous rocky coastline up close! The Point offers stunning views of not only the ocean itself, but the neighboring Mount Desert Island. Cadillac Mountain stands tall over the island, and the gorgeous granite features accent the already-breathtaking scenery! Despite not being on the island, this part of the Schoodic Peninsula is inside of Acadia National Park. Check out the link above for more information!

End your sightseeing and shopping day at

    • A great stop to fill up on awesome foods and enjoy craft beer from famous Maine breweries like Geaghan’s and Black Bear. Stop by their Hot Dog Cart where amazing selections like seasoned fries, flatbread pizza, and more are being served. Be sure to try their famous blueberry pie.

Day 2 (Birch Harbor and Prospect Harbor)

Before heading to the next two harbors, stop by J. M. Gerrish Cafe again for another wonderful breakfast!

Check out US Bells

Located in Prospect Harbor! Richard Fisher has been making bells for over 40 years, and they are sold in shops across the country. Explore the unique and gorgeous craft of bell-making, as well as the sculpture and art of Fisher and others!

Antique Boutique

A wonderful antique shop located in Gouldsboro, just north of the harbor a ways. The building used to be a general store, and is now home to jewelry, home accessories, and more!

After some shopping, have some lunch at The Pickled Wrinkle

It’s the perfect stop before heading out to do some sightseeing!

A major landmark to see next is the Prospect Harbor Lighthouse!

Prospect Harbor Light

190 Lighthouse Point Road, Gouldsboro, ME 04669

Originally from 1850, the current keeper’s house structure is from 1891. The house has a beautiful black and white theme, and the light is still used to this day for navigation, thanks to modern optical equipment.

Open seasonally, the dairy bar serves slushies, sundaes, floats, and more! Be sure to try out Maine’s own Gifford’s Ice Cream while you’re there.

The weather in Maine can be unpredictable. Therefore, here are some ideas to be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers, Maine is very casual, so you probably will not find any restaurants that require formal attire.

 

Spring/Summer/Fall: clothes, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking, sun hat, sunscreen, sweater or jacket, insect repellent, toiletries, and phone/camera

Winter: clothes (layers), ski pants highly recommended, winter boots, jacket, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toiletries, and phone/camera. Please pack a helmet if you are participating in snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding.

Fun Facts

  • The Schoodic Peninsula was at once time a major base of operations for the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • The Schoodic Peninsular and surrounding areas were geologically-active areas at one time; molten rock flowed through the area and formed gorgeous rock formations that are evidenced by multi-colored splotches and segments in the bedrock.
