SOE Assistant Professor Jonathan Malacarne presents research at 2020 AAEA Virtual Meeting

SOE Assistant Professor Jonathan Malacarne presented his research on index insurance contracts at the 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA). In his research poster talk, Salient Risks and Contract Quality: Estimating Demand for Index Insurance in Mozambique and Tanzania, Jonathan shared the results of his collaborative work with Laura Paul (University of Delaware), Jon Einar Flatnes (The Ohio State University), Steve Boucher (UC Davis), and Michael Carter (UC Davis). Analyzing data from a randomized controlled trial promoting drought-tolerant maize seed (DTM) with and without index insurance, Jonathan and colleagues explored linkages between farmers’ risk perceptions and drought experiences on revealed and derived demands for insured DTM products. They find drought to be extremely salient to farmers in the region, many of whom demonstrate that they are willing to pay the full actuarially fair premium to purchase insured maize seed. At the same time, demand for DTM itself is very sensitive to price and depends on farmers’ recent experiences with drought.
