Dr. Sharon Klein and Graduate Student Emma Fox are helping stakeholders evaluate hydropower dams

SOE Faculty Member Dr. Sharon Klein and SOE/EES Graduate Student Emma Fox are doing research and engaging with stakeholders to support improved evaluation of different options for hydropower dams. As part of the NSF funded Future of Dams Project based at the Mitchell Center, Dr. Klein and Emma Fox are developing a decision support tool based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to help stakeholders weigh different alternatives and navigate the inevitable tradeoffs associated with hydropower relicensing decisions. They are currently focused on decisions regarding dams in the Penobscot River watershed. Klein and Fox recently hosted a participatory workshop with stakeholders to get feedback on their MCDA decision support tool and to test related participatory processes.
