Cultural Tourism Program Manager – Remote – Must Reside in Maine
Full Job Description
Four Directions Development Corporation (FDDC) in Orono, Maine is seeking to fill a new position as Cultural Tourism Program Manager. FDDC’s mission is improving the social and economic conditions of the four Native American tribes in Maine — Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot — through education and investment in affordable housing, tribal business ventures and native entrepreneurship.
The Cultural Tourism Program Manager leads the efforts to encourage, develop, expand and enhance cultural heritage tourism for the Native American tourism industry in Maine. The manager will work closely with the Wabanaki Tribes and coordinate the Wabanaki Cultural Tourism Initiative (WCTI) and its three major elements: 1) development of a Wabanaki level comprehensive strategy in partnership Maine’s Office of Tourism; 2) business development programs and services for new, emerging and established Wabanaki tourism businesses; and 3) tourism product development and marketing plans. The manager is responsible for administering the WCTI program funds.
Specific responsibilities include: conducting outreach into Wabanaki communities to identify assets and potential opportunities for cultural tourism development and collecting data through face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews, written surveys and meeting with appropriate governmental, community and tribal representatives; reviewing Maine tourism market data and other sources to determine potential niches for tribal and entrepreneurial businesses; developing a marketing plan to encourage cultural heritage visitation and promote tribal tourism products, programs and events; identifying and working with other partners such as the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, Brand USA and George Washington University School of Business to help with product development and marketing; developing WCTI program guidelines, procedures, policies, rules and regulations, and developing and administering the tourism program budget; identifying funding resources, developing program content, and assisting with or preparing proposals for grants and investments from governmental, philanthropic, and corporate sources; developing training, technical assistance, and other resources to address tourism capacity building needs of the tribes; tracking data and evaluating program activities; ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations; representing FDDC on boards and councils involved in the economic development and tourism industries.
This position can work remotely as long as the employee lives in Penobscot, Aroostook or Washington Counties, and is willing to travel within the 3-county area as needed.
Qualified applicants will have: a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Hospitality or the equivalent in education and closely related work experience, and 3-5 years of closely-related work experience in the tourism industry, with tribal tourism experience preferred; prior experience working with Native American tribes preferred; demonstrated experience generating funding for programs; a strong desire to work in Native American communities is essential; strong oral and written communications skills, including presentation skills; strong computer proficiency (Microsoft Office including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word), Internet and related programs required; current valid Maine driver’s license, safe driving record and reliable transportation are required. Native American ancestry preferred.
