Evolution of the Rising Tide Center: 2010-2016

The Rising Tide Center was established in 2010 with funding from the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation program. During the project period, the University of Maine achieved a number of important milestones, including:
♦ Meeting new goals for recruitment, retention, and advancement of women faculty in STEM/Social-Behavioral Sciences;
♦ Fostering positive change in workplace policies and climate;
♦ Increasing job satisfaction among women STEM/SBS faculty;
♦ Serving more than 80% of faculty through voluntary participation at one or more Rising Tide events.

An Expanded Mission and a New Wave: 2016-2020

In recognition of the success of the ADVANCE initiatives implemented at UMaine, and exemplifying the center’s partnership with campus administration, the Office of Academic Affairs provided financial support and oversight for the Rising Tide Center from 2016 – 2020.
Before closing on July 1, 2020, the center served a broadened stakeholder base with a focus on enhancing diversity, advancing equity and inclusion at UMaine, and at other higher education institutions in the University system and across Maine.

A rising tide truly lifts all boats.

The NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation project and the subsequent work of the Rising Tide Center yielded a number of peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations that are a resource for  the University of Maine System, and for other academic institutions.
