MST Applicant Information: Prerequisites

All Applicants

  • An undergraduate degree in science, mathematics, engineering, secondary science or mathematics education, or a closely related field
  • GRE or documentation of your mathematical skills and writing ability:
    • It is not required that applicants for the Master of Science in Teaching (MST) Program take the GRE General Test, but it is strongly recommended. (More information is available through the Graduate School.) If taking the GRE General Test is a financial hardship for you, please contact the MST Graduate Coordinator, for consideration of payment for the test by the RiSE Center.
    • If you choose not to take the GRE General Test, then you must, in other parts of your application, show strong mathematics skills and demonstrate your likely ability to write a Master’s level research thesis. One of these places must be a letter of recommendation that includes information about your writing ability, supporting the likelihood that, if you are admitted, you would be able to write a Master’s level thesis.
  • Students working toward certification must pass all required Praxis exams (students may be admitted conditionally upon passing these exams during their first year in the program, if other program prerequisites are satisfied).  Students need to take the Praxis I exam, and the Praxis II (content specific) exam. You are not required to take the Praxis Methods exam. Completing SMT 501-502, 503-504, or 505-506 classes satisfies this methods requirement for the state.
