There are lots of opportunities to participate in Maine Composts Week contests. Scroll down the page for more information on the challenges listed below.

Composting Advertisement Video
- Time limit of 30 seconds
- May use any digital manipulation, editing, or other tactic to make the video
- Must be submitted in MP4, MOV, or WMV format
- Standard decency applies, if you couldn’t use this for a school project appropriately then it will be rejected
Hand-Drawn Art Poster
- No size requirements. Can be an 8.5″x11″ piece of paper or a large canvas.
- It may be on a thicker than standard paper (oak tag for instance)
- Landscape or portrait orientation both acceptable
- All content must be drawn with no electronic or digital assistance
- Any medium may be used (color pencils, crayons, color pastels,paint, charcoal,etc.)
- Contest age ranges: 0-6, 7-10, 11-14, 15-18, 19-39, 40-59, 60+
Waste in Your Backpack
- Carry around all the materials that you’d normally throw away in your backpack for 5 days (Monday @ 8:00am-Friday @ 2:00pm, including nights
***For this to be one effectively you should be composting this week!
- You may recycle, but only if it is an acceptable material
- At the end of the week take a picture of your “Trash” and post it to the Maine Composts Week Facebook, Twitter, or Instragram page with the hashtag #wasteinmybackpackchallenge
- You can also upload your photo in the form below.
**It is recommended you take effort to purchase your food wisely this week as packaging matters!
Compost Selfie
- Take an unaltered picture of you (any others) composting. This can be at any part of the process from collection all the way to your bin
- Save the picture as a .jpeg or .png file
Digital Poster
- Any images must be open-source to be included in the submission
- Any un-original aspect of the poster can each only be 20% of the poster
- Design for a 8.5”x11” standard letter size piece of paper
- Landscape or portrait orientation fine both acceptable
- All content must be digitally generated (i.e. no hand-drawn aspect)
- Any electronic program or tool may be used to aid in creating this poster
- We request individuals, in particular younger students, exclusively work on their submission. Their hand should be on the mouse and keyboard at all times during the creation of the poster
- Contest age ranges: 0-10, 11-14, 15-18, 19+
Share Table Selfie
If your school has set up a Share Table in your cafeteria, this is your chance to make it famous.
- Take an un-altered picture of your school’s Share Table. Use this selfie as an opportunity to show what students place on the Share Table.
- The 3 categories for this contest: Individuals or Groups/Classes in Elementary, Middle and High School
- Save your photo as a .jpeg or.png file.
Mason Jar Challenge
This week you are limited to throwing away in total only what would fit in a Mason Jar! (Monday @ 8:00am-Friday @ 2:00pm, including nights!)
***For this to be done effectively you should be composting this week!
- You may recycle, but only if it is an acceptable material
- At the end of the week take a picture of the “Trash” in your Mason Jar and post it to the Maine Composts Week Facebook, Twitter, or Instragram page with the hashtag #masonjarchallenge
- You can also Submit your photo in the form below.

Do-It-Yourself Compost Bin Competition
- Take a picture of your compost bin
- Create a small list of the key materials you used to create it (ignore common things like screws and nails)
- Save the picture as a .jpeg or .png file
