Cellular and Molecular Determinants of a Fatal Viral Infection

October 9, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please join us for the third UMaine Medicine Fall 2020 Seminar. This seminar series will take place every Friday, 3:00 – 4:00 pm from September 25 through November 13.

Speaker: Melissa Maginnis, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Maginnis was born and raised in Pennsylvania and earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Neumann College. Dr. Maginnis earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Vanderbilt University and performed postdoctoral training at Brown University. Dr. Maginnis joined the UMaine faculty in 2014, and her laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular basis of viral disease. Defining how viruses recognize and invade cells within the host can ultimately elucidate targets for novel antiviral therapies to prevent or treat viral illnesses. Dr. Maginnis is dedicated to teaching undergraduates and graduate students at UMaine and training the next generation of biomedical scientists through experiential learning.

She serves as the Associate Director of The Center for Undergraduate Research and is a member of the UMS Scientific Advisory Board, formed to stay fully abreast of fast-breaking scientific and medical developments in areas relevant for universities and the COVID-19 pandemic, including vaccine development, diagnostic and serology testing, antiviral treatments, transmission mitigation, contact tracing, and others.
