Advanced Optical Imaging in Neuroscience

October 2, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please join us for the second UMaine Medicine Fall 2020 Seminar. This seminar series will take place every Friday, 3:00 – 4:00 pm from September 25 through November 13.

Speaker: Wilson Adams, Ph.D. Candidate, NDSEG Fellow at Vanderbilt University

Abstract: With an increased interest in studying the molecular and functional workings of the brain – now more than ever – there is a need for tools to study the brain at the physical limits of observation. With help from the BRAIN initiative, there are now more tools than ever in the neuroscientist’s toolbox. Optical imaging and neuromodulation offer important advantages to studying the brain in tandem with more conventional approaches. Combined with the right molecular biology tools, the possibilities for targeting specific cell type, and sensing neuromodulatory molecules,  imaging at the physical limits of speed and spatial resolution are more accessible than ever. In this talk, I will give an overview of some of the latest developments in optical imaging and neuromodulation techniques for neuroscience research – with a focus on multiphoton based approaches. I will discuss the exciting advancements on the horizon, where effort is still needed, and what we can do as engineers to better design tools for impact on fundamental and translational research.
