University of Maine College of Education and Human Development alumna Hillary Hoyt (‘13, elementary education) is one of two Maine teachers to receive a prestigious 2021-2022 Milken Educator Award, created by the Milken Family Foundation to celebrate, elevate and activate the teaching profession. Hoyt received the award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize that she can spend however she wishes, at a surprise assembly on Tuesday at Leroy H. Smith School in Winterport, where she teaches third grade. The recognition garnered news coverage statewide, including in the Bangor Daily News, the Penobscot Bay Pilot, WABI (Channel 5), and News Center Maine. The other Maine teacher to receive a Milken Educator Award this year is Jamie Karaffa, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Bruce M. Whittier Middle School in Poland.
