Dixie Turner PictureAbout Me

I am originally from the Shenandoah Valley in northwest Virginia. I have always been an animal lover and currently have 4 cats, 3 dogs, and 2 aquariums full of fish and aquatic frogs. I enjoy spending time with family, hiking, and travelling to new places. Zip lining above the rain forest in Costa Rica has been the highlight of my travels so far. When at home I like to curl up on the couch with one of my furry children and binge-watch crime shows.

What has been your most embarrassing moment (that you are willing to share)?

My first job was being the unit secretary of the Med-Surg floor of our local hospital. Part of my job was to shred the carbon-copies of each patient’s medication record at the end of each day. One night, I accidentally shredded the original record by accident and the security guard had to spend the whole night digging through the shredder and taping it back together. Needless to say, I have been a lot more careful since then.

What is your favorite food?

A turtle sundae from Freddy’s custard.

If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Honestly I would love to visit any place I have never been. I love thrifting in small local towns and travelling to other countries.

Professional Credentials and Interests?

I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from Louisiana Tech University and a certificate in Multicultural Counseling during my internship year at Michigan State University. I work from a multicultural/feminist framework and enjoy using techniques from a variety of perspectives including mindfulness-based, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches. I have training and experience working with individuals from different racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds and enjoy working with individuals from the LGBTQ+ community as well. In recent years I have particularly enjoyed working with transgender students in various stages of the transition process.
