The University of Maine is committed to supporting faculty members and graduate students who wish to:
- learn about,
- experiment with,
- adopt, and
new approaches to teaching and learning.
The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) provides support for innovative pedagogical efforts and promotes excellent teaching and learning at the University of Maine.
Together with our partner centers and departments, we work to create and sustain a culture of innovation in teaching. To this end, we offer numerous workshops and personalized consulting on curricular and instructional design; diversity, equity, inclusion, and access; instructional and information technologies; and, related efforts to support 21st Century information and learning cultures. In collaboration with the UMaine Library, CITL supports faculty and academic departments wishing to replace expensive textbooks with free or open source alternatives.
CITL’s services have grown since its launch in 2016-2017 to meet the ever-increasing needs of UM/UMM faculty. CITL now provides support in five general areas:
- Faculty educational development programming
- Instructional design and development
- Faculty instructional technology support
- The Hackerspace (a digital makerspace for those beginning their campus journeys into 3D printing, microprocessors, and a range of embedded tech)
- Planning, deploying, and/or managing physical and virtual instructional environments
CITL has outfitted learning design studios with video and audio production facilities and staffed them with instructional designers. We also have resources for developing animations, graphics, data visualization, and digital mapping to help faculty utilize a range of the most current information and instructional technologies.
In all areas, CITL supports instructors of every rank, including graduate students, part-time faculty, lecturers, pre-tenure, and tenured faculty. It also supports faculty teaching face-to-face, online, hybrid, synchronous, asynchronous, or any other modality and at any time of year.
