We encourage students to visit us early and throughout their time at The University of Maine.  The Career Center offers a variety of services that span the needs and various developmental stages of our students throughout their undergraduate and graduate years.  One of the best reasons for a student to visit us early on is to assist them with choosing a major if they are undecided or unsure of their current major.  We can also help them gain a clearer picture of how their chosen major connects to internship and career opportunities.  First year students find the Career Center helpful in creating a resume (or updating a high school resume) to apply for part time jobs on or off campus.  There are many specific ways that we can help new first year and transfer students as soon as they arrive on campus.  Please encourage your student to utilize our services early and often.

We offer several career related events throughout the academic year.  We hold our annual Engineering and Computing Job Fair each October and our all majors Career Fair each February.  We also offer several career events in collaboration with academic partners and employers including an Accounting Firm Night, a Federal Jobs workshop, Careers in Outdoor Recreation, Careers in Behavioral Health, a Career Exploration Fair in Environmental Science, Energy, Sustainability, Archaeology & Historic Preservation, Careers In Law and Justice, Maine Summer Camps Fair, and more.  We host several employers in a variety of industries for information sessions and on campus interviews for internships and full time positions. The Career Center also hosts collaborative events with the Graduate School, TRIO support services, Office of International Programs, Residence Life staff, and more. For a full list of upcoming events, click here:

We all assist students with developing their Career Ready skills however, do our students realize that they are developing these skills and can they articulate them in an interview?  Naming the skill that an activity or assignment focuses upon will help students to understand and articulate these skills.  The National Association of Colleges and Employers has developed the NACE Competency Assessment Tool.  Eight competencies are identified in this assessment which can be easily integrated into an existing project or assignment.  These include: Career and Self Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity and Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, and Technology. This overview provides definitions for the competencies.

We are located on the 3rd floor of the Memorial Union, upstairs from the Information Center.  Your student has likely been to the Union to visit the Bookstore or to eat a meal in the Bear’s Den Marketplace.  Students may schedule an appointment by visiting us during regular business hours (8-4:30 M-F), by utilizing their navigate app, calling 207-581-1359, or visiting our office.

We also offer walk-in hours on a weekly basis during the academic year.  Students do not need an appointment during these hours and can simply walk in for help.  Refer to our website for the current walk-in hours.

We are here to help!  Your student can schedule an appointment with any of our career counselors to discuss issues of concern, future plans or anything related to their career development.  We frequently refer students to additional campus resources to help with related concerns that may come up during an appointment (such as academic support, financial aid, residence life, counseling, etc). We help students make connections with our colleagues across campus as needed.

Yes! We all several types of guides that are available in our office. We also have several that are available to download as well. These guides are a helpful first step to review before scheduling an appointment with us. View our guides below.

You can search on our job board called Career Link. If you’re an active student, you can access Career Link through your UMaine Portal. Additionally, you can access Career Link directly through this link here, or accessed through our home page.

We understand that housing can be tough, so we have created a page for students to help secure summer housing through various campus dorms. Please have a look here for our compiled list here. Aside from summer dorms, it’s also great to explore local news papers, flyers and social media.
