Business Minors


Business minors, with the exception of the Innovation minor, are open to non-business majors only. Business minors, with the exception of the Innovation minor, are open to non-business majors only. Minors provide an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their degree. UMaine students majoring outside of Maine Business School can choose one of four business minors within MBS.

Accounting

Complete eight (8) courses (24 credit hours):

  • Principles of Financial Accounting (ACC 201)*
  • Principles of Managerial Accounting (ACC 202)*
  • Intermediate Accounting I (ACC 301)*
  • Intermediate Accounting II (ACC 302)
  • Cost Accounting (ACC 305)
  • Auditing (ACC 310)
  • Federal Income Taxation (ACC 312)
  • Accounting Elective

*Course must be passed with a grade of C- or better. Open to non-business majors only.

To become a certified public accountant in the state of Maine, 15 credit hours of accounting and 150 total credit hours of higher education are required. Interested students may consider applying to the Graduate School of Business MaineMBA in Accounting program to complete the additional credit hour requirements. Business Administration

Complete nine (9) courses (27 credit hours):

  • Introduction to Business (MGT 101)
  • Mathematics (MAT 115/116/126)
  • Principles of Financial Accounting (ACC 201)
  • Principles of Marketing (MKT 270)
  • Principles of Management and Organization (MGT 325)
  • Business Finance (FIN 350)*
  • Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 120)
  • Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 121)
  • General Psychology (PSY 100)

All courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better

*Needs prerequisite of ACC 201, ECO 120, ECO 121, and MAT 115, MAT 116, or MAT 126. Open to non-business majors only.

The business administration minor prepares a student for a leadership position within their career. This minor enhances a breadth of business skills and complements all other majors of study.

 


Innovation

Complete six (6) courses (18 credit hours):

  • Fundamentals of Innovation (INV 121)
  • Advanced Innovation Skills (INV 282)
  • Innovation Leadership (INV 405)
  • Special Topics in Innovation (INV 471)
  • Internship in Innovation (INV 480)
  • Independent Study in Innovation (INV 490)

All courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better.

The innovation minor is for students from across the University of Maine designed to assist in pursuing innovation and entrepreneurship. This minor is designed to complement any major or field of study, including business, arts, humanities, engineering, education, and the sciences.

A management minor many be declared in the second semester of enrollment at UMaine.


Marketing

Complete seven (7) courses (21 credit hours):

A marketing minor may be declared, at the earliest, in the second semester of a student’s enrollment. All business classes must be taken for a grade (no pass/fail permitted). Must earn a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the required business courses. Must earn a minimum of a C- in MKT 270, with only one opportunity to repeat a class.
