FirstClass - FirstClass Client
FirstClass is UMaine’s official communications system which provides ALL students with the ability to effectively communicate and share valuable resources and information via email, conferencing (public, private or courses), directories, individual and shared calendars and online chats. Users also have the ability to build their own web pages, whether personal or course related, and to share documents and files.
This software is usually run as a desktop client, using the software found below. However, it can be accessed in alternate forms.
- Download and run the appropriate FirstClass Installer for your operating system:
- Start the FirstClass client.
- Click setup, and fill the Server field with fc.umit.maine.edu
- Click Save.
- Enter your username and password, and connect. (Need access?)
- Should you lose the server settings, click Setup, type fc.umit.maine.edu in the Server field, and click Save.
Connect via 3rd Party Mail Programs
You can connect your email program (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) to your FirstClass mailbox via a standard POP protocol, learn more about connecting to FirstClass using a mail client here.
Some documentation is here:
- Outlook 2007 for FirstClass
- Thunderbird for FirstClass
- Windows Live Mail for FirstClass
- Mac Mail for FirstClass
By doing this, the email will be physically stored on your personal computer, and virtually you will have no mailbox size limitations. You will also be able to have more options in organizing and filtering content, this method is not without it’s limitations however, you can only access your mailbox, you can not access the more powerful features such as conferences. Thus, you may still need the FirstClass client handy. Find suitable mail clients here.
