TARGETED MENTORING SUPPORTS FACULTY RETENTION
In an effort to supplement departmental mentoring initiatives, the ADVANCE Rising Tide Center launched a targeted mentoring program for new and junior faculty in 2012. The goal was to tap into the expertise of our long time faculty to support and retain less experienced faculty who could use some help finding success at UMaine.
Targeted mentoring benefits the mentor and the mentee with a small, focused commitment. Based on their interests and experience, senior faculty identify unique expertise they can share through mentoring. Junior faculty select topics to gain new knowledge in specific areas of academia such as establishing a research program, preparing competitive grant applications, or establishing a reputation as a scholar. The Rising Tide Center seeks to connect mentors with mentees, to facilitate establishment of mentoring relationships.
Retaining talented faculty across all ranks is critical to the strategic mission of UMaine.

RECOGNIZING ROLE MODELS
The EXCELLENCE IN FACULTY MENTORING Award honors a UMaine faculty member who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to faculty mentoring through actively assisting non-tenured, tenure-track faculty in developing their careers by offering advice and guidance that reflects a deep understanding of their department, their college, or the institution. The award is meant to recognize the process by which faculty serve as role models, promoting the professional development of their colleagues, and creating supportive, positive working environments.
Our initial awardee (2014), is Dr. Sandra Sigmon. The 2015 Outstanding Faculty Mentor is Becky Van Beneden, and in 2016 Dr. Carol Kim was recognized for her dedicated faculty mentoring efforts. Many thanks to these outstanding faculty for sharing their time and their expertise with junior colleagues!
