Mental Health Basics

According the the WHO definition, “Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.” We all go through different experiences throughout our lives, and each person requires nuanced strategies to cope with the variety of stressors they face. The UMaine community is here to provide support for your mental health maintenance.

Maintaining positive mental health is a lifelong endeavor with many hurdles and obstacles. Developing effective coping strategies is key to successfully navigating and overcoming life’s challenges.

If you have any questions or are struggling to develop some good strategies, using resources like the Student Wellness Resource Center or the Counseling Center is a good place to begin!

Coping Skills

The ways with which you manage your stress, feelings, and emotions are called coping. Coping skills are strategies that you use to handle difficult situations that may include stress and anxiety.

Strategies for coping are very individualized, but here are a few common methods that may be successful for you:

Deep Breathing

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

5 Senses Grounding

Prioritizing Your Needs

Staying Organized

Media Literacy/Taking a Social Media Break
