Human-Centered AI and Spatial Computing Graduate Assistantships

The VEMI Lab (https://umaine.edu/vemi/) at the University of Maine is seeking multiple fully funded PhD level graduate assistants in Human-Centered AI and Spatial Computing to join ongoing projects related to accessible navigation, multisensory augmented reality, and inclusive transportation.

Students will work with Dr. Nicholas Giudice, Dr. Paul Fink, and the VEMI Research Team on the next generation of mobility harnessing computer vision and wearable interfaces. Successful candidates will enter the Spatial Information Science and Engineering PhD program at UMaine (https://spatial.umaine.edu/) and will receive a full tuition waiver and stipend.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new augmented reality applications and immersive autonomous vehicle simulations for underserved transportation populations
  • Conduct research leveraging Apple Vision Pro, computer-vision, in-vehicle interfaces, and mobile smart devices
  • Author peer-reviewed journal and conference papers
  • Contribute to grant applications and industry contracts

Qualifications:

  • Background and interest in Unreal, Unity, and/or iOS development
  • SwiftUI, C++, C#, and/or Python experience
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Interest in conducting human-subject research

Candidates who successfully pass the initial screening process with Dr. Giudice and Dr. Fink must also apply and be accepted to the Ph.D. program in Spatial Computing in the School of Computing and Information Science at the University of Maine.
