Image file size update (media library increase)
To date, images uploaded to your website had a file size limitation of 1MB. The reason for this limitation is to encourage content managers to optimize their images for the web — modern digital cameras (including those in smart phones) typically create images much larger than is needed on the web page.
With 4K and “retina” displays becoming more common, this 1MB file size limit is too restrictive. As of early November, we have increased this limitation to 3MB per image.
If you find that your image is still too large for the media library, we recommend you optimize the photo for web:
- for landscape oriented images, reduce the image with to 1600 pixels
- for portrait oriented images, reduce the image width to 1000 pixels
Important note: The media library in our campus WordPress environment is only intended for images. While it will allow you to upload PDF, Word, Excel, and other file types, the “Resources” feature is a much better solution for documents on your site.
