Note – we put some scheduled times in here just to give you some ideas. You can pick and choose what you want to do. Be sure to look at when they are open and if there are any COVID restrictions. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to call any that you plan to visit just to be on the safe side.

DAY 1

Pick up lunch at Oquossoc Grocery

Head to Oquossoc Grocery to grab some items for lunch for later in the day! This grocer sells “grab and go” items perfect for a quick meal while you’re out on your hike.

Head to the Appalachian Trail Piazza Rock

The Piazza Rock route along the Appalachian Trail features a moderate, 4.1-mile hike with a 450-foot elevation. The trail passes through unique rock formations and is great for families seeking an all-day hike. 

Find a comfortable spot for your picnic

While you’re hiking the Piazza Rock, don’t forget to find a spot for your picnic with that lunch you picked up earlier!

The trails and surrounding areas around the Piazza Rock are full of unique caves and rock formations that are fun to explore.

DAY 2

Pick up lunch at Oquossoc Grocery

Once again, head to Oquossoc Grocery to pick up lunch for later in the day. 

Head to the Bigelow Preserve Cranberry Peak Trail

The Cranberry Peak Trail is a difficult 5.2-mile long trail located in the Bigelow Preserve. The area also features multiple other trails of varying difficulties. The Cranberry Trail features beautiful forest views and a breathtaking summit.

Don’t forget about that picnic you packed! Have lunch along the trail once you reach the summit, or anywhere in between.

Packing Checklist

The weather in Maine can be unpredictable. Therefore, here are some ideas to be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers, Maine is very casual, so you probably will not find any restaurants that require formal attire.

 

Spring/Summer/Fall: clothes, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking, sun hat, sunscreen, sweater or jacket, insect repellent, toiletries, and phone/camera

Winter: clothes (layers), ski pants highly recommended, winter boots, jacket, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toiletries, and phone/camera. Please pack a helmet if you are participating in snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding.

Fun Facts

  1. Bigelow Preserve consists of over 36,000 acres of public access land!
  2. During your Cranberry Peak hike, you’ll encounter Arnold’s Well: named after Benedict Arnold!
  3. At the end of your Appalachian Trail – Piazza Rock hike, you’ll be treated with the sights of some gorgeous rock formations!
  4. The Piazza Rock was formed from a very large piece of granite that split from Saddleback Mountain!
  5. If you want to deviate from your hike, the Piazza Rock Trail passes very near to “The Caves” – an area with caves that were formed from the plummeting rocks of the cliffs above. Look into it!
